چکیده

DUE TO SHORTAGE of organ donation, limited manpower, and financial resources, a high mortality rate was found on the waiting list for pediatric liver transplantation. The purpose of this study was to document the variable changes in the hemodynamics of hepatic artery and portal vein by Doppler ultrasound and to assess their significance to the mortality in the waiting list and the need for early surgical intervention of liver transplantation for life-saving purposes.

Review of Natural History, Benefits and Risk Factors Pediatric Liver Transplantation

Liver or hepatic transplantation (LT) is the replacement of a diseased liver with part or whole healthy liver from another person (allograft). Human liver transplants were first performed by Thomas Starzl in the United States and Roy Calne in Cambridge, England in 1963 and 1967, respectively. Liver transplantation is a viable treatment option for end-stage liver disease and acute liver failure....

Short and Long Term Complications after Pediatric Liver Transplantation: A Review and Literature

Background: Pediatric liver transplant is a complex surgical procedure. Pediatric liver transplantation has evolved over the last two decades into an effective and widely accepted therapy for infants and children. The aim of our report is to review the current state of knowledge and explore the incidence of complications, the involved pathogens among liver recipients to determine the effective ...

Risk factors for intraoperative portal vein thrombosis in pediatric living donor liver transplantation.

Pathologic changes of the recipient native portal venous system may cause thrombosis of the portal vein, especially in pediatric living donor liver transplantation (LDLT). This study assessed the utility of Doppler ultrasound (US) for the detection of intraoperative portal vein occlusion and identification of predisposing risk factors in the recipients. Seventy-three pediatric recipients who un...

Predicted lifetimes for adult and pediatric split liver versus adult whole liver transplant recipients.

Split liver transplantation allows 2 recipients to receive transplants from one organ. Comparisons of predicted lifetimes for two alternatives (split liver for an adult and pediatric recipient vs. whole liver for an adult recipient) can help guide the use of donor livers. We analyzed mortality risk for 48,888 waitlisted candidates, 907 split and 21,913 whole deceased donor liver transplant reci...

Effect of body mass index on the survival benefit of liver transplantation.

Obese patients are at higher risk for morbidity and mortality after liver transplantation (LT) than nonobese recipients. However, there are no reports assessing the survival benefit of LT according to recipient body mass index (BMI). A retrospective cohort of liver transplant candidates who were initially wait-listed between September 2001 and December 2004 was identified in the Scientific Regi...
